Gillian Hession Prepares for World Weightlifting Masters Championship

Gillian Hession, a Limerick native, is gearing up to represent Ireland in her second World Weightlifting Masters Championship, which kicks off tomorrow in Athens, Greece. This championship brings together weightlifters aged 35 and older from around the globe, competing across various age and weight categories, including those over 90 years old. Hession will compete in the W45, 61kg category for women aged between 45 and 49, showcasing her rapid ascent in the sport since she began training with Cork Weightlifting Club just 19 months ago.

Having previously participated in tennis and CrossFit, Hession describes her journey into Olympic weightlifting as both humbling and transformative. "When I first started, I was quite raw. So, it's been a very humbling experience over the last year, kind of unlearning motor patterns. I mean, I had a training bar some days last year," she explained. Hession emphasizes the importance of focusing on her training, nutrition, and sleep as she balances her athletic pursuits with work and family life. "But I know that on the day, I’ll just put as much effort as I can, leave everything I can on the platform - and just go for it really," she added.

Hession's coach, Ian Byrne, has witnessed her growth and dedication firsthand. He noted that when she first joined the club, her technique needed significant improvement due to her CrossFit background. Now, as she prepares for her second World Championship, Byrne praises her diligence and the inspiration she provides to younger athletes. "Gill is one of the more senior athletes in the club, acting as a role model to younger lifters. They can see a strong and powerful woman who cares less about being skinny and more about being strong," he said.

Empowering Women in Weightlifting

As a female athlete in a traditionally male-dominated sport, Hession aims to dispel stereotypes and encourage more women to participate in weightlifting. "It’s about a 50-50 ratio," she remarked, highlighting the importance of fostering a supportive environment for women in sports. Hession also expressed concern over the trend of young girls dropping out of sports during secondary school, stressing the confidence and empowerment that comes from weightlifting. "You need to start thinking about your body as something you can use, that’s capable, that’s empowering - because it is," she stated.

Hession has found a strong sense of community within the Cork Weightlifting Club, which she describes as exceptionally supportive. "Whether you’re lifting 25kg or 105kg, it’s all about the effort and respecting your fellow lifters. I’ve made lifelong friends, and honestly, there’s no feeling like actually feeling strong and feeling powerful. So I would recommend anyone to give it a go. It’s such a fantastic sport," she concluded.

The World Masters Weightlifting Championships will take place from September 17 to 26, showcasing the talents and dedication of weightlifters from around the world.
