Rivian R2 Shows Higher Energy Consumption Than Tesla Model Y in Tests

Sep 24, 2026

A recent test conducted by Out of Spec Reviews revealed that the Rivian R2 Performance consumes significantly more energy than the Tesla Model Y Performance under real-world conditions, despite both vehicles having identical EPA efficiency ratings. This discrepancy raises questions about the accuracy of EPA ratings and their implications for electric vehicle consumers.

Rivian R2 Shows Higher Energy Consumption Than Tesla Model Y in Tests

Out of Spec Reviews recently conducted a head-to-head energy efficiency test between the Rivian R2 Performance and the Tesla Model Y Performance, both vehicles driving the same routes on the same day. The results showed that the R2 used between 18% to 26% more energy at every speed tested, a surprising outcome given that both SUVs share identical EPA efficiency ratings. Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe has previously stated that the R2 matches the Model Y in efficiency, but this testing challenges that claim.

The EPA ratings for both vehicles indicate they achieve 105 MPGe combined and 32 kWh per 100 miles. While the R2 excels in city driving with a rating of 114 compared to the Model Y's 111, it falls short on the highway cycle, scoring 100 against the Model Y's 96. Additionally, the R2 offers a longer range of 330 miles compared to the Model Y's 306 miles. However, these ratings are derived from controlled lab conditions, which often do not reflect real-world driving scenarios.

The discrepancy in energy consumption raises concerns about the methodology used by the EPA to derive these ratings. The EPA provides manufacturers with multiple testing paths for range and efficiency labeling, with the more expensive multi-cycle test yielding more accurate results. Out of Spec's Kyle Conner suggests that Rivian likely used the comprehensive testing method, while Tesla may have submitted derived numbers, leading to the conflicting results observed during real-world driving.

Another layer of complexity is introduced by the fact that the EPA's kWh/100 miles figure includes charging losses measured at the wall, while Out of Spec's measurements are taken directly from the battery. This means that while the EPA suggests the R2 performs slightly better in efficiency, real-world testing indicates it falls short.

Testing Methodology and Results Overview

The methodology of the test was carefully controlled, with both vehicles allowed to cool before testing and set to identical tire pressures and climate controls. The R2 was tested in its Conserve mode, while the Model Y was in Chill mode. The results showed that the R2's energy consumption was notably higher across various speeds, except for one instance at 70 mph, which was affected by traffic conditions.

Community Events

In a separate test, the R2 demonstrated impressive charging capabilities, achieving a peak of 229 kW while charging from 10% to 59% in just 15 minutes. This performance highlights Rivian's engineering strengths, particularly in charging efficiency, despite its overall energy consumption being less favorable compared to the Model Y.

Ultimately, this test serves as a crucial reminder that EPA ratings may not always align with real-world performance. For consumers considering the R2 or Model Y, understanding these discrepancies is vital, especially for those who prioritize efficiency in their outdoor adventures. As the electric vehicle market continues to evolve, these insights will be important for potential buyers navigating their options.
