David Mesfin's Project Aims to Diversify AI Imagery of Surfers
David Mesfin, a filmmaker and creative director, has launched a project called Refacing the Future to address the lack of representation of Black surfers and other BIPOC individuals in AI-generated imagery. This initiative aims to retrain AI models to include diverse representations in outdoor sports, particularly surfing, by collaborating with various creative agencies and utilizing a BIPOC imagery database.
David Mesfin faced a frustrating challenge when trying to generate an image of a Black surfer using AI technology. Despite his straightforward prompt, the AI consistently produced an image of a white man with dark skin holding a surfboard. This glaring oversight highlighted a significant issue: Black surfers and other BIPOC individuals were largely absent from the datasets used by these advanced technologies. Mesfin, a filmmaker and creative director, found this particularly ironic as he had just completed a documentary titled "Wade in the Water," which chronicles the often-overlooked 1,000-year history of Black surfing.
Instead of feeling disheartened by this lack of representation, Mesfin saw an opportunity to effect change. He initiated the project Refacing the Future, enlisting the help of Pocstock, a BIPOC imagery database, along with numerous creative agencies. This project aims to retrain popular AI models used by industry giants like OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft to ensure that they accurately reflect the diversity of the world, particularly in outdoor sports.
"We need a broader group of people that can actually look at this technology and what is being developed," Mesfin stated. He emphasized that tools created for the world should represent it accurately. The outdoor sports community has long grappled with misrepresentation, as many BIPOC athletes have watched predominantly white athletes dominate media portrayals throughout their lives. Mesfin himself grew up in St. Augustine, Florida, where he often saw athletes who did not resemble him in the media he consumed.
The issue extends beyond just surfing; it encompasses a broader pattern of underrepresentation in various fields. A 2019 federal study revealed that Asian and Black individuals were significantly more likely to be misidentified or misrepresented by AI models compared to their white counterparts. This reflects a historical bias in media portrayals of BIPOC communities, which AI systems inadvertently perpetuate.
To combat these biases, Refacing the Future aims to flood AI systems with diverse imagery. Mesfin's partnership with Pocstock, which boasts over 1.8 million images of people of color, is pivotal to this initiative. Each image in the Pocstock database is meticulously tagged with details such as skin tone, gender, race, and age, allowing AI models to better recognize and incorporate these identifiers into their outputs. The project aims to produce a wealth of original media featuring BIPOC athletes, with 16 photographers working to create 96,000 pieces of content within a year.
Launching the BIPOC AI Guidebook
In addition to generating new imagery, the initiative has also published the first BIPOC AI guidebook. This comprehensive resource is designed to help creative agencies understand how to diversify their content creation processes. It includes guidelines on how to conduct photoshoots with diverse talent and how to tag images effectively to eliminate bias. Mesfin hopes that by sharing this guidebook, agencies will be better equipped to authentically represent the communities they depict.
Recently, Mesfin and a team of photographers gathered at Huntington Pier in Southern California to create new imagery that reflects the diversity of surfers. This shoot marked a significant moment for Mesfin, who had previously identified the gaps in representation during his own attempts to find images of Black surfers. With the support of photographers like Kory Lamberts, who shares Mesfin's vision for inclusivity, the project aims to reshape how the surfing community is portrayed in media.
The Importance of Representation in Sports
As Refacing the Future continues to grow, it seeks to address various areas of underrepresentation, including women in STEM fields and the evolving roles of women in society. Mesfin's commitment to diversifying the narrative surrounding outdoor sports is a crucial step toward ensuring that all athletes, regardless of their background, are accurately represented in the media that shapes public perception.
The initiative not only highlights the need for diversity in AI-generated imagery but also serves as a reminder of the broader implications of representation in sports. By actively working to include BIPOC individuals in media portrayals, Mesfin and his team are fostering a more inclusive environment within the surfing community and beyond. As they continue to challenge existing biases and stereotypes, the hope is that future generations of athletes will see themselves reflected in the media they consume, inspiring a new wave of participation in outdoor sports.
