The International Tree Climbing Championship celebrated its 50th anniversary in St. Louis, drawing nearly 100 arborists from 22 countries to compete in a thrilling display of climbing skill. On a sunny Friday, competitors donned helmets and harnesses as they ascended pine, sweetgum, and oak trees in a local park, demonstrating their expertise in a variety of challenging events.
Among the highlights was the belayed speed climb, where climbers raced to the treetops while fellow competitors cheered them on. Spectators watched in awe as participants navigated the branches to locate a dummy during the aerial rescue event. E.J. Turner, a seasoned climber and five-time Midwest chapter competition winner, expressed his enthusiasm for the work climb, a favorite among the competitors. "It’s a lot more climbing involved, and a lot more movement throughout the tree, jumping and swinging. It’s kind of like being a kid," he shared.
The competition features several events, including the ascent and throwline challenges, with the highest scorers advancing to the prestigious Masters’ Challenge. This year’s championship not only showcases the skills of arborists but also highlights the work they do in their everyday jobs, according to Caitlyn Pollihan, CEO of the International Society of Arboriculture, which organizes the event. Pollihan noted the camaraderie among the competitors, many of whom have faced off in previous contests.
Athlete Spotlights
The first International Tree Climbing Championship was held in St. Louis in 1976, and the choice to return to the same city for this milestone event was a deliberate nod to its origins. Organizers have planned special speeches and keepsakes to commemorate the 50-year legacy of the championship, ensuring that this year’s event is both a celebration of skill and a tribute to the community that has grown around tree climbing.
As the competition unfolds over three days, the excitement builds not just for the climbers, but for the spectators who are eager to witness the impressive feats of agility and teamwork. With a mix of competitive spirit and shared passion for climbing, the International Tree Climbing Championship continues to inspire both participants and fans alike.
