Oct 17, 2026

As autumn hiking season approaches, police in Saitama Prefecture are urging hikers to submit climbing plans to improve safety. Nearly 80% of individuals involved in mountain emergencies this year did not file the necessary climbing notifications, prompting authorities to emphasize the importance of this precaution.

Saitama Police Urge Hikers to Submit Climbing Plans This Autumn

As the busy autumn hiking season approaches, police in Saitama Prefecture are calling on hikers to submit their climbing plans before heading into the mountains. This initiative comes in response to alarming statistics indicating that nearly 80% of individuals involved in mountain emergencies this year failed to file the required climbing notifications.

On October 12, officers gathered at the base of Mount Bonorei in Hanno City to encourage hikers to complete a climbing notification, known as a tozan-todoke. This document records vital information, including the planned hiking route and details about the climbers in the group. Such information is crucial for rescue teams, enabling them to locate missing or injured hikers more efficiently during emergencies.

A parent hiking with their child expressed support for the initiative, stating, "It's easy to fill out, and it can be useful in an emergency, so I think everyone should submit one." This sentiment reflects a growing awareness of the importance of safety measures in outdoor activities.

According to the Saitama Prefectural Police, there have been 53 reported mountain emergencies in the prefecture so far this year, with a significant portion of those incidents involving individuals who did not submit a climbing notification. Police officials stress that providing information about the route and the members of the hiking party can greatly enhance the speed of rescue operations, particularly when hikers become lost or injured in challenging mountainous terrain.

Importance of Submitting Climbing Plans

With an increase in hikers expected during the autumn season, authorities are emphasizing the simple yet effective precaution of submitting a climbing plan. This proactive measure can help ensure a swift response in case of emergencies, ultimately contributing to the safety of outdoor enthusiasts.

In related news, the region is also monitoring the impact of Typhoon No. 29 (Koguma), which was moving north near the Ogasawara Islands, potentially bringing high waves and swells along Japan's Pacific coast. While the typhoon is not expected to have direct impacts on the mountainous areas, hikers are advised to remain vigilant and informed about weather conditions as they plan their excursions.

As the El Niño phenomenon continues to influence weather patterns, Japan is bracing for a warmer-than-normal winter, which could affect outdoor activities in the coming months. Hikers are encouraged to stay updated on conditions and follow safety guidelines to ensure enjoyable and safe experiences in the great outdoors.
