State 6061 Trail+ Fat Bike Features Slacker Geometry and Hydraulic Brakes
State Bicycle Co. has unveiled the updated 6061 Trail+ fat bike, featuring significant changes in geometry, improved braking systems, and enhanced bikepacking capabilities. With a slacker head tube angle and upgraded components, this model aims to deliver better performance for riders.
State Bicycle Co. has recently announced updates to its 6061 Trail+ fat bike, marking a significant shift in design and functionality. The new model features a slacker 66° head tube angle, a notable change from the previous 71°, which enhances stability and control on various terrains. Additionally, the frame has been constructed from hydroformed 6061 aluminum, providing both durability and a lightweight feel. The chainstays have been extended to 455mm across all sizes, while the reach has increased to 480mm for the largest frame size, improving overall rider comfort and positioning.
The cockpit of the Trail+ v2 has also seen enhancements, with a wider 740mm handlebar replacing the previous 700mm version, and a shorter 50mm stem, down from 70mm. This design aims to provide a more trail-oriented geometry, similar to that found in traditional mountain bikes, making it suitable for a variety of riding conditions.
One of the most significant upgrades is the transition from mechanical to hydraulic brakes, with the inclusion of Tektro HD-M275 hydraulic brakes paired with 180mm rotors at both the front and rear. This change promises improved stopping power and modulation, which is crucial for navigating challenging trails.
The new Trail+ v2 is equipped with thru-axles measuring 150x15mm in the front and 197x12mm in the rear, replacing the quick-release hubs of the previous model. The rear dropout is UDH-compatible, and the frame now includes internal routing for a dropper post, enhancing the bike's versatility for different riding styles. Furthermore, cargo mounts on the top tube, down tube, and fork, along with bottle mounts, make this bike an excellent choice for bikepacking adventures.
Enhanced Gear System for Diverse Terrain
Although the bike has been reduced to eight speeds from the previous nine, it offers a wider gear range with an 11-45T cassette paired with a 28T chainring. This configuration is designed to optimize performance in soft sand, deep snow, and steep climbs, where cadence can be challenging to maintain.
Latest Developments in Active Sports
The State 6061 Trail+ v2 rolls on 26" double-wall alloy rims fitted with Kenda Juggernaut 26x4.5" tires. However, it's worth noting that the wheels and tires are not rated for tubeless setups. The frame allows for a maximum tire size of 26x4.5", but it can accommodate up to 4.8" tires with an optional carbon fork upgrade priced at $299.99.
With a retail price of $1,199.99, the Trail+ v2 is positioned as a budget-friendly option in the fat bike market, especially when compared to other models like the aluminum Beargrease Eagle, which retails for $1,999. State Bicycle Co. anticipates that the new bikes will begin shipping in late October, available in small, medium, and large sizes in two color options: Firehouse Red and Raw/Black.
