Tragic Shark Attack Claims Life of Swimmer in South Africa
A 65-year-old woman was killed in a shark attack while swimming off the coast of South Africa's Eastern Cape, prompting the closure of local beaches. The incident has raised safety concerns among swimmers in the area.
A tragic incident unfolded on Tuesday when a 65-year-old woman was killed in a shark attack off the southeastern coast of South Africa. The attack occurred at Orient Beach in KuGompo city, formerly known as East London, where authorities responded to reports of distress around 7 a.m. Eastern Cape police spokesperson Col. Siphokazi Mawisa confirmed that officers discovered the woman's body upon arrival, leading to an immediate investigation into the circumstances of her death.
The Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality expressed deep sorrow over the incident, confirming the fatal shark attack and the loss of the swimmer. Municipal spokesman Luzuko Buku stated, "We are deeply saddened to confirm that a fatal shark attack occurred at Orient Beach this morning, resulting in the tragic loss of a swimmer."
Witnesses reported that fellow swimmers from an open-water swimming group responded to the woman's distress signals and managed to bring her ashore. Despite the efforts of a medic in the group, she was pronounced dead at the scene. Fellow swimmer Mike Loewe described her as a courageous individual who often swam alone. He noted that she was a recently retired nuclear radiographer and a musician, and her passing has left the local swimming community devastated.

In response to the attack, the municipality has closed both Orient Beach and the nearby Eastern Beach until further notice. Additionally, warnings have been issued for all local beaches, urging beachgoers to heed safety advisories and instructions from local authorities. While South Africa is known for its great white sharks and has a thriving shark tourism industry, shark attacks remain relatively rare. According to the Florida Museum of Natural History’s International Shark Attack File, there were 29 unprovoked shark bites recorded in the country between 2012 and 2021, averaging about three per year, with six resulting in fatalities.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers that can arise in open-water swimming, prompting both swimmers and beachgoers to remain vigilant and informed about safety measures when enjoying the ocean.
