Asian Games in Japan Marred by Organizational Chaos

Oct 28, 2026

The Asian Games held in Nagoya, Japan, faced significant organizational challenges, including accommodation shortages and transport errors, leading to widespread criticism. Despite these issues, the event saw the achievement of 54 new world records, raising questions about Japan's ability to host future international competitions.

Asian Games in Japan Marred by Organizational Chaos

Japan has long been recognized for its ability to host major international events, from the Olympics to various cultural conventions. However, the recent Asian Games in Nagoya and the surrounding Aichi Prefecture have been overshadowed by a series of organizational mishaps that have drawn harsh criticism. Reports from participants and observers have labeled this year's Games as potentially the "worst in history," sparking calls for a thorough investigation into the management of the event.

Prof. Kozo Tomiyama, an expert in major sporting events at Osaka University, expressed concerns that the failures could tarnish Japan's reputation for hosting international competitions, which might hinder the country's ability to attract future events. The deputy director general of the Games, Takaaki Omi, acknowledged the unforeseen challenges faced by the organizers but insisted that they were responsive to feedback and made necessary improvements throughout the event.

Before the Games even commenced, many athletes voiced their dissatisfaction with the quality and availability of accommodation. In a cost-cutting measure, organizers opted not to construct a traditional athletes' village, instead housing participants in hotels and temporary container-style units. This decision proved problematic, especially for taller athletes who found the container beds inadequate. As the number of participants swelled unexpectedly, organizers resorted to using an Italian cruise ship with 1,500 cabins to accommodate the overflow, a situation that highlighted the logistical mismanagement.

Initially, the organizing committee had arranged for housing for 15,000 delegation members, in line with their host city contract. However, as more sports were added to the roster, the number of participants increased to 17,000. This last-minute influx led to confusion, with organizers initially stating that there was "simply nowhere" to house the late arrivals, only to later promise that all guests would receive appropriate accommodation.

The issues did not end there. Throughout the Games, athletes were mistakenly transported to incorrect venues, and diplomatic blunders occurred, such as the South Korean anthem being played for the men's hockey team instead of the correct national anthem. Additionally, during the men's football gold medal ceremony, the South Korean flag was not displayed correctly, prompting an official apology from the organizing committee.

As the Games progressed, volunteers were invited to attend the closing ceremony free of charge, only to be informed later that this offer was still under review. Omi admitted that managing an event of this scale presented significant challenges, with daily issues requiring immediate attention. Despite these setbacks, he emphasized that they listened to athlete feedback and made prompt adjustments where necessary.

Scrutiny of Venue Management Decisions

The media scrutiny has largely focused on GL Events, the French company responsible for venue operations, which won the contract over Dentsu Group, a well-established player in the field. Critics have suggested that GL Events cut corners on staffing, leading to a shortage of experienced personnel capable of managing the complexities of the Games. However, Omi defended the choice of GL Events, asserting that they had the necessary experience in international sporting events, including the Paris Olympics.

Prof. Tomiyama remarked that it would be unfair to solely blame GL Events for the problems, suggesting that the broad scope of their responsibilities and the nature of the negotiated contract should be examined. The situation has raised questions about how organizers assessed the contractor's capabilities and their oversight after the contract was awarded.

The series of mishaps has not only affected the Asian Games but has also continued into the ongoing Para Games, where similar issues have arisen, including the wrong national anthems being played at several events. Nagoya's mayor, Ichiro Hirosawa, labeled the situation as "unacceptable" and offered his apologies.

Community Events

While the organizational chaos has overshadowed the event, it is worth noting that the Asian Games still witnessed the setting of 54 new world records across various sports, including swimming and weightlifting. Olympic Council of Asia director general Husain al-Musallam highlighted these achievements as evidence of the potential for success, despite the logistical failures. He emphasized that athletes cannot perform well without adequate rest and transportation, underscoring the importance of a well-managed environment for competitive success.

As the dust settles on the Asian Games, many hope that lessons will be learned to improve the quality of future sporting events in Japan.
