Newmen Components Launches Adjustable-Width Mountain Bike Handlebars
Newmen Components has introduced a new adjustable-width handlebar for mountain bikes, allowing riders to customize their handlebar width for optimal comfort and performance. The Phase model features a unique VariGrip system that enables adjustments between specific width ranges, catering to different riding styles.
Having handlebars of the proper width is crucial for mountain bikers, as narrowing them can limit future adjustments. However, Newmen Components has tackled this challenge with their innovative adjustable-width handlebars, known as the Phase. Available in both XC-Trail and Enduro-Downhill models, these carbon handlebars utilize Newmen's patented VariGrip system, which allows riders to modify the width according to their preferences.
The VariGrip system incorporates a proprietary grip design, featuring an internal metal bolt that runs lengthwise from the grip's outer end inward. When the grip is attached to the handlebar and twisted, this bolt engages a threaded insert within the bar, effectively securing the grip in place. Numerical markings along the bar indicate the total width achieved when both grips are adjusted to the same distance. Once the desired width is set, a pinch bolt on each grip collar locks them firmly in place.
The XC-Trail model offers a width range of 710 to 760 mm, while the Enduro-Downhill model can be adjusted from 760 to 810 mm. Weighing in at 191 g and 209 g respectively, these handlebars provide a lightweight option for riders looking to enhance their biking experience. The Phase XC-Trail is currently available for €160 (approximately US$179), and the Enduro-Downhill version is priced at €165 (around US$185).
Athlete Spotlights
This isn't the first time adjustable-width handlebars have hit the market. Other brands, like Canyon and Ibis, have also developed similar products, allowing riders to customize their handlebar width for better handling and comfort. However, Newmen's approach with the VariGrip system stands out for its ease of use and precise adjustments, catering to the diverse needs of mountain bikers.
The introduction of the Phase handlebars is significant for the cycling community, as it highlights the ongoing innovation in bike technology aimed at enhancing rider performance and comfort. As mountain biking continues to grow in popularity, products like these will likely play a crucial role in shaping the future of the sport.
